![]() Is this just explaining hard science in terms that are easier to understand and apply for a lay man? Like I don’t know, take 10 minute breaks to help refuel my fuel tank? Doesn’t seem like a scientifically sound statement to make to me. But, in this video on how to treat ADHD based off science (I’m sure you have all seen it), he starts talking about a fuel tank for executive function and it just doesn’t sound very scientific at all. I actually love it when he says ADHD isn’t a gift, and he dispels other myths. One thing I really like about Barkley is that he appears to use true, good science. I can test it later, but I’m sure I’d get the same results off Adderall.Įdit: also, I’d love your opinions and insights on this as well. I am also on Adderall right now and free of distractions, if that makes a difference. Should I draw any conclusions from this? I’m just confused to why some of the things he says about ADHD don’t apply to me, while 95% of what he says is dead on. Either way, it’s a far cry from “can’t do digit span backwards”. Intra-class partial correlations from STATA (which used the ‘cluster command to control for the family structure) indicated that this dropped to r 0.39, r 0.42 and r 0.41 when controlling for RTV, digit span forward (DSF) and digit span backward (DSB), respectively. I seem capable of doing digit span backwards, but maybe it’s harder for me or I can’t do it as well as some neurotypical people. After some practice, I could do five digits accurately like maybe 70% of the time if I try really hard, and six digits and up I get the wrong answer basically every time.īased off what Dr Barkley said, it sounds like I should struggle a lot more. Out of curiosity, I found this online test you can take, and it is kind of hard to do it. The story memory task can be administered in approximately 10 minutes.I was watching a video lecture by Dr Russell Barkley, and he says that we can’t do digit span backwards. This is not so different from many daily life situations where one needs to pay attention to what someone is saying and keep it in mind long enough to understand and recall what has been said. However, our data clearly showed working. Once cognitive ability was controlled, no group differences emerged for Digit Span or digits forward notably, the ADHD-Predominantly Inattentive group was. It has limited the testing range and is not as good as the visual-spatial working memory test. It provides an objective measure to assess an individual’s ability to pay attention to a sizable, but manageable, chunk of verbal information and to remember what has been heard. Forth, WAIS digit span was used to probe working memory. We suggest that the story memory task has more ecological validity than numerically-based measures of working memory. Results support our hypotheses that adolescents and adults with ADHD tend to score significantly lower on both of these tasks, with significantly more difficulty on story memory, than do most persons of comparable age in the general population. Responses are then scored relative to age norms.Ģ) The Working Memory Index (WMI), a combination of two subtests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale–Fourth Edition: the digit span (forward and backward) and mental arithmetic. Immediately after each story is read aloud by the examiner, the patient is asked to retell it to the examiner, as close to verbatim as possible. Measures compared were:ġ) A normed story recall test consisting of two brief stories from the Wechsler Memory Scale read aloud to the patient only once. They often forget things in the here-and-now: what others have just said to them, where they have put something, what they were about to do, what they have just finished reading, and so on. In DSB, the child must recall the list of digits in reverse order. The sample (n90) included children with no diagnosis and children with a range of clinical problems, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although individuals with ADHD may have excellent recall of long-term memories, they often report having chronic difficulty with their short term working memory (WM). AbstractThis study examined the extent to which digits forward (DF) or digits backward (DB) account for variance in parent ratings of attention and executive function in children. This study compares two normed measures used in ADHD evaluations to assess impairments in working memory. ADHD showed considerable impairments in memory functions related to executive control.
